Originally completed in 1925, the Maxfield Building was the first structure in Downtown Los Angeles constructed entirely of reinforced concrete. Designed by architect John Montgomery Cooper, the building represented a shift toward modern efficiency and restraint, showcasing exposed concrete in place of the elaborate ornamentation typical of its time.
Commissioned by Allen Maxfield, a banker from Arkansas, the building originally housed Maxfield & Co., a wholesale textile and dry goods company and factory. Its bold Art Deco design and pioneering use of structure made it a hallmark of early twentieth-century innovation in Los Angeles architecture.
Acquired by Capital Foresight in 2012, the property was restored and converted into loft residences in partnership with Lahmon Architects. Today, Maxfield Lofts stands as a revitalized historic landmark, preserving its industrial heritage while contributing to the ongoing renaissance of Downtown Los Angeles.
